Coworking Defined

I have been working in the serviced office space industry for 19 years now.  In NYC, the term and functionality of coworking has become commonplace.  It seems like everyone know what you get with coworking.

When we created Colony Workplaces, I built our website, including a “coworking” page, and left the page sparse with words because I figured “everyone” knew what it is alllll about. This past weekend, I received a lead, inquiring about our coworking program.  The lead assumed that she would get her own private office, I assumed she knew the she was getting access to open space in a common room.  I thought her expectations were lofty and unrealistic, she might have thought this was a bait and switch.  While I was disappointed by her request, I soon realized that I failed to communicate what we do and what we sell.  I should never have assumed that “coworking” was common knowledge.  I hope this article gives every consumer a clear understanding of the levels of service found in coworking space.

Coworking Defined

Coworking workspace provides the user with access to a large team room, used by other members and companies. On the base level, you gain access to the space and take whatever desk or workspace is available.  The consumer brings everything with them when they arrive and they take everything when they leave.  You could leave your items in a locker, but that would be at an added cost.

If you are looking for more then random space, you couldupgradeto a dedicated desk in common space.  You still work surrounded by the activity and energy of others, with the luxury of being able to leave things and set the space to your liking.  The advantage is, not only do you get to personalize your space, but you get to leave some of your personal items and you do have the convenience of getting the same space everyday.

The highest level of coworking space would be to have your own private office or Suite.  Here we find that small companies need their own private space, but are not quiet ready for traditional office space.  You still have the luxury of a private office space, but you still enjoy the luxury of serviced office space.  This means that you needn’t worry about managing your office.  You pay one price and get a furnished office, all utilities included, Internet, and most importantly, you get short terms. Minimum commitment with maximum flexibility.
