Working Alone Sucks
The Perils of Working Alone
So, you have a great business plan. You know your product like no one else. You have connections, marketing skills and an endless amount of hours to perfect your company. You set up an office in your house and start your journey alone, because you don’t need help. But to use a Mike Tyson quote that has often been repeated on Shark Tank, “everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face.”
What do you do when you set out on your own, without a business partner, then you run into a wall. Maybe you only know how to build a nice website, not a great one. Maybe, if you worked in a coworking space, the person next to you could help you with some easy legal questions. What happens when you get punched in the face and can’t up? Who is there to keep things going for you?
Yes, you might know everything and you might be the best at what you do, but no one can go it alone. It has been said before, the most successful people aren’t the smartest, they only hire the smartest. They surround themselves with the right business partner.
As Colony learns how to do what we need to succeed, Bill and I can joke that each of us is the king of Colony, but the reality is that it would not succeed without the both of us at the helm. There are plenty of times that I want to sail down wind and Bill wants a close haul, but at some point, we will round the marker and head on the next leg of our journey.
Sure you can do it alone, but this might not be the smartest way to go through life. Surround yourself with good people, family, a business partner and friends. You will be happier and more successful! And as we will both attest, behind every great man, there is a greater woman.
